The media center welcomed our new 6th graders to the exciting world of middle school literature in a fun way.  Not one, but two popular authors, Margaret Peterson Haddix and Lisa McMann talked to the 6th grade on Wednesday, September 7th in the auditorium.  Margaret Peterson Haddix is well known for her futuristic Shadow Children series (Among the Hidden, Among the Imposters, etc.) where the Population Police enforce a law preventing families from having a third “shadow child.” Margaret discussed Torn, the fourth book in her exciting and mysterious time-travel series The Missing.  In Torn the main characters are whisked through time to 1611, just moments before the mutiny on Henry Hudson’s ship in the frozen waters of the James Bay.

Accompanying Margaret was Lisa McMann, author of the Wake series for young adults.  Lisa has written a new middle school novel called The Unwanteds that’s being described as The Hunger Games meets Harry Potter.  In the book, 13 year-olds from the community of Quill are sorted into categories: Wanteds or Unwanteds.  The Wanteds go on to be productive members of society, and the Unwanteds are sent to their death, but there is a magical secret behind the Unwanteds’ true fates.

Both authors gave enthusiastic presentations about their books, inspirations, and writing careers.  We also held an autographing session in the media center immediately following their talks where students and staff meet the authors while they got their books signed.

This author visit was possible because of our wonderful community partnership with Quail Ridge Books & Music.
